Governor Deal Signing Ceremony
On April 16th, 2012, Governor Deal signed House Bill 711 into law. House Bill 711 will take effect starting January 1st, 2013.
House Bill 711 eliminates the spousal privilege in domestic violence criminal cases and provides for confidential communications between advocates at Georgia’s domestic violence and sexual assault centers and the victims they serve. The passage of this bill gives prosecutors more tools to hold abusers accountable, while also ensuring that victims have a safe, confidential venue outside the criminal justice system to plan for their safety and recover from their experiences of abuse.
